Upon meeting Georgia Sinclair I was immediately struck by her laid back demeanor and her can-do attitude. The TV Presenter turned DJ started as a model in her teens and from that progressed to Television as host of the hit Warner Brother’s children’s show, Kids’ WB.
In an industry that not so long ago was largely male dominated, I wondered why she then chose to add ‘DJ’ to her CV. “A few years back, I had a health-scare” (Sinclair was diagnosed with a benign brain-tumour which she has since had treated with surgery). “It may sound bizarre but it was a gift. The tumour changed my perspective on life and how I wanted to live it. From the moment I was given the all-clear post-surgery, I decided I would do everything I had ever wanted to do regardless of what others thought or how impossible it seemed. Becoming a successful DJ was number one on my list.” Her response indicated to me that her choice of career might have been met with some cynicism. “Of course, initially a lot of people assumed I was ‘DJ press-play.’ A lot of female DJ’s are criticised for that, particularly those who have other careers. I don’t mind though, it’s lovely to see the crowd reactions when I turn up to a gig and rock the room. The positive feedback, support and opportunities I’ve received in recent times has been over-whelming.”
In just a few short years, Sinclair has performed at every major club in Melbourne and Sydney and has been on the bill alongside some of the world’s biggest names at many of Australia’s most exclusive private parties and events including Roger Sanchez, Redfoo and only a few weeks ago, Michelle Rodriguez. Recently, Sinclair was signed to management in the US and now plans to split her time between Melbourne and LA. “I travelled to LA a few times last year to explore the market. I am very fortunate to have been given a number of wonderful opportunities (in both music production and as a DJ) as a result of those trips. I’d be crazy not to check it out!”
For our shoot, Sinclair was styled head-to-toe in labels from iconic Melbourne store Seagulls Of St. Kilda, including Cameo The Label, Elliatt and Another. The stores owner, Chivy Chan, was in attendance and it was clear the two are close friends. Chan revealed that the two met late last year when she approached Sinclair to become a ‘#socialseagulls.’ I asked what that entailed. “Seagulls of St. Kilda has an exclusive and diverse group of brand ambassadors affectionately known as #socialseagulls. The #socialseagulls is successful, motivated and inspirational. Our group includes blogger Rozalia Russian, blogger She is Sarah Jane, model Sophie Van Den Akker, PR whizz Lil Romano, Singer Zoe Badwi, Actress Dena Kaplan and of course Georgia. They are all unique women who style themselves very differently. We have an enormous variety of designs and labels in-store and are able to cater to each of their needs and personal tastes.” So what is the concept behind your store? “Nothing over $250 with most item’s priced around the $100 mark or even less. High-fashion shouldn’t necessarily cost a fortune and should be accessible to as many people as possible. We want every woman to look great and feel great.”
